FROM PAGE C1 Under the auspices of the NV School Board, Writing 44 was adapted this summer from a program called Project Literacy which has proved highly successful in Huatington Beach, _The program is divided in two: the workshop and the _’ lab. The workshops deal with the writing process — the generation of ideas, the proofreading and presen- “The workshop is a very active setting with students exchanging ideas, working in small groups, discussing issues and topics which concern them. They’re not just writing routinely -— they’re writing about things that are meaningful to them,” Marshal said. They consider their audience; no longer do they write only for the teacher. It may be the principal, the Chamber of Commerce, their parents or the class next door. “The audience governs the style and focus of writing. If it’s a letter of complaint to a store it’s written in one way: if it's a friendly letter to Aunt Mary, it’s written in another way,” Marshall explains. The students write cvery day, though not all of what they write is marked. The pupils also participate in group conferences where they react to one another’s writing. important part of the writing process. Marshall says that traditionally, kids have viewed editing as little more than improving their hand- writing. “They’ve not had the sense of shifting words and phrases about, of moving nuances.” The lab has to do with the mechanics of writing. “The teacher will not, as has been done in the past, return the paper bleeding.” said Marshall. POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT To avoid overwhelming discouragement — which in times past, has occasioned some students to despair and give up -— the teacher identifies only the most critical errors the student is making. At the same time, he will give positive rein- forcement regarding what's good about the writing. St. Paul’s Hospital R.N. In the lab the most glaring errors are remediated through a series of exercises geared to correct individual grammatical problems. Thus each student can con- centrate on his own specific area of weakness. Throughout the program, students have access to an automated marker. They can test themselves, put their answers into the machine and gain instant feedback. Immediately they know whether they need more work or can proceed to the next problem. Evaluation is a_ crucial aspect of any new program and Writing 44 boasts an elaborate system that both promotes fairness and provides indisputable evidence of the student’s progress or lack of it. Initial tests identify major problem areas. At the end of the course, the kids are tested again and progress Includes cut, perm & conditioner The Redken English Introductory Special ‘Day into Night” Permanent Wave BONUS OFFER Complimentary microscopic hair analysis with your perm special! Specific criteria are established and the student's evaluation is based on achievement, progress and effort. Each component is graded separately. A portion of the student's ultimate evaluation is gleaned from the assessment of two teachers. Any notable deviation in the marks results in a third assessment. Another portion of the final mark is based on the student’s own selection of his best piece of writing, marked in the same way. Not only is Dr. Marshall especially enthusiastic about the program; so are, he says, the teachers. And, already, he says, the students are showing more interest wu English class.
