Conversions can make your
vehicle burn much cleaner

WITH SOME people estimating
that gasoline will be a thing of the
past in 10 to 15 years, we are
looking more seriously at fuel
alternatives.

One currently-available alter-
native gaining popularity with
North Shore residents is natural
gas.

Any vehicle can be turned into
a cleaner-burning automobile with
the addition of a switch, a tank
and the mechanism needed to feed
natural gas to the standard engine.

The task takes 15 to 16 hours,
says Phil Wheatley, owner of
Lomax Natural Gas Conversions,
a North Shore company specializ-

ing in conversions that allow con-
sumers io burn either natural gas
or conventional gasoline.

“The most complex part is
connecting it to the computer or
electronics,”’ he said,

This procedure i is only necessary
on newer vehicles, making the
conversion on an older car
simpler, but Wheatley said that
the resulting performance is not as
good with the older autos.

“Fuel injection vehicles run bet-
ter than they used to,”’ he ex-
plained.

“We are able to get better
results with newer cars than with
those built five or six years ago.”’

There are two reasons why
people convert their vehicles,
Wheatley said.
