To the past few sears. the resi
dents of British Columbia have
made outstanding efforts to pro-
lect our environment. We recycle
our garbage and paper, we
carefully choose products which
are not harmful to the ozone
layer, and we also are becoming
more aware of cruelty-free shopp-
ing.

But are we not still concerned
with animal rights?

What about the three beluga
whales flown in’ from northern
Manitoba in ‘twater-filled travel-
ling boxes to be presented for
“public display’’ in three months?
Well, it is wonderful to hear that
they arrived “‘jetlagged, but live-
ly.’ and ‘“‘without incident,’ but
itis a real shame that a beluga
whale, who has never even been
out of the water, must experience
“Setlag."*

And the Aquarium public rela-
tions argument? Well, the life ex-
pectancy is at least 20 years longer
in captivity for the beluga.

Fantastic — so I suppose you
would rather live in a cage,
secluded from all that is familiar
and natural, and away from all
other humans (except the one they
have chosen for you to mate with
of course) just so that you could
live longer. Why should happiness

‘Propane Pete’
could save life

Dear Editor:

I concur completely with the
author of the July 6 article entitl-
ed Don’t fet gas barbecue become
a flame thrower, but | would also
like to make the public aware that
these ‘‘flame throwing’’ accidents
need not happen if due care and
attention were exercised and the
proper safety device installed.

Each spring, local fire depart-
ments conduct safety seminars
throughcut the province, and fast
year our provincial government
and gas safety branch were so
concerned that’ they published
Warning to Gas Barbecue Users.

“Propane Pete,’ an excessive
flow safety valve, is demonstrated
at many of these seminars and the
Gas Safety Branch was instrumen-
tal in assisting its certification by
the Canadian Gas Association.

A combination of common
sense and ‘Propane Pete’ could
alleviate many of these accidents,
and | would appreciate your
assistance in bringing this to the
attention of users of gas barbecues
and other propane appliances.
