iS HAVING an appointed body of politicians antithetical
to a liberal democracy? Canada’s provinces seem to think
so and have been quietly lobbying for an elected Senate.
Alberta has been particularly vocal in her quest for the
“triple-E”’’ Senate, an upper house that’s elected, effec-
tive and equal. Advocates say an elected Senate would

But others argue that an elected Senate with effective
powers would stall the legislative process, especially if the
majorities in the two houses were of different parties.

prevention week with display

WEST VANCOUVER Police will be observing Na-
tional Crime Prevention Week, Oct. 29 to Nov. 4,
with an informaticnal display at Park Royal south.

The display, set up Thursday through Saturday, will
be manned by police officers, alarm and lock com-
pany representatives and West Vancouver Block
Parent representatives.

Police will be on hand to answer questions noon to
9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and noon to 6 p.m. on
Saturday.

The following checklist of crime prevention tips is
provided by the federal Ministry of the Solicitor Gen-
eral of Canada:

SECURE HOME

Make sure your house always looks lived-in. Leave
a radio playing and a light on to discourage thieves.
When you go away for longer periods of time, make
arrangements for someone to pick up the newspaper,
collect mail and parcels, and if possible, to park in
your driveway.

®@Don’t announce your absence. Try to vary the times
you leave and arrive back at home. Never leave a
“Back at 2:30" note on your door.

eUse proper locks. Install and use good locks on
your doors, windows and garage. Your local police
can reccmmend the best type. Change locks when you
move into a new residence. Ensure that strong dead-
bolt locks are properly installed. Don’t hide keys out-

side. Lock up ladders, tools and recreational equip-
ment.

eEngrave your valuables. Mark everything which is
yaluable and movable with a personal number. Even
if your home is burglarized, your property will more
likely be returned to you if it is marked.

SECURE CAR

eLock your car every time you leave it and take the
keys with you.

eLock all valuables in the trunk. Don’t tempt thieves
by leaving packages, cameras or purses on the seat.
®Park in well-lit, busy areas -- for your own safety
as well as your car’s.

Consider buying smooth, non-flared locking but-
tons for your car doors.

*Engrave removable accessories such as batteries,
hubcaps and stereos.

®Never have personal identification on your key
ring. Thieves may use it to locate your car.

LOCK BIKES

Secure bicycles and motorcycles with a strong chain
and lock or a specially-designed lock.
Never leave them unlocked, even at home.

*Lock your storage space.
