renovations
are many

EACH YEAR, thousands of Ca-
nadians wndertake major renova-
tion projects designed to transtorm
their humbie abodes into dream
homes of the future.

The rewards of a well-planned
and executed renovation job are
many, including personal satisfac-
tion, enhanced comfort and in-
creased merket value of the home.
But the path to these rewards is
not without its pitfalls.

Renovation is construction, and
that means noise, sawdust and
other inconveniences. By planning
ahead — and knowing what to ex-
pect -—- you can minimize problems
and help erisure a smooth job.

Communicating effectively with
your contractor may be the single
most inyportant factor in maintain-
ing a normal home life in the midst
of major renovations.

As a first step, ask your contrac-
tor to go over the entire job with
you. In addition to explaining the
work to be performed, the con-
tractor should be able to teli you
how the project will affect other
areas of the home and whether it
will have an effect on such factors
as plumbing, heating and electrical
services.

Question the contractor at
length on how the work will affect
your daily routine. For example, if
the contractor tells you that the
water or electrical service will have
to be temporarily turned off, find
out when so you can plan your ac-
tivities accordingly.

Determine at what time the crew
will start work in the morning,
when they will finish at night, and
whether there wiil be any weekend
work. If certain times are not con-
venient for you, let the contractor
know at the outset.

The contractor and crew will
likely sequire a key to your house
and access to washrooms, the tele-
phone and certain services. Make it
clear that other areas of the home
are off jimits, and that your
household belongings are not to be
used without your permission.

Dirt and dust are a fact of life in
even the most basic of renovation
projects. There are, however, ways
to minimize these problems. Keep
the following tips in mind:
