iV athiete breaks high jump record FOR THE second weekend in a row, West Vancouver’s Sara MeGladdery has set a new school record in high jump. On April 22, McGiaddery, a 19-year-old freshman at Simon Fraser University, jumped 1.78 metres at the prestigious Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., breaking the school record she set the week before at the SFU Invitational. Local seores TODD MIELKE has done twice what most golfers dream of doing once in a lifetime. In two consecutive days on two different golf courses, the 22- year-old West Vancouver salesman scored a hole-in-one. “I saw the first one go in but not the second one,”’ said an astonished Mielke. I didn’t see the ball go in because the sun was shining in my eyes. I saw it flash by the hole but when 1 walked up to it I realized it went in. I couldn’t believe it.”” The former West Vancouver McGladdery left her mark on SFU’s record books April 16 when she broke the university record in high jump at the District 1 Hep- tathlon Championship at Co- quitlam Town Centre Track, leap- ing 1.74 metres, breaking the old SFU record of 1.70 set by Toni Hamner in 1983. “It was a big meet and I was re- ally worked up for it, ’” McGlad- dery said of the April 16 meet. 2 holes in 7 high student was with envious friend Ken Reid on both days. Mielke’s first ace came on a Uni- versity of B.C. 125-yard par 3 where he knocked it in with a nine iron. Lightning struck the second time on a Pt. Grey 165-yard. Mielkes’ miracle wasn’t just a fluke. He had an excellent round both days, scoring 76 and 79 on the next day. Mielke, who has golfed for the past nine years and has a five handicap, said he has only scored one other hole-in-one on a pitch and putt course. Winning streaks continue THE BLACK Sheep Rats, Avalon and Lynnwood Inn Giants mixed fastpitch teams extended their winning streaks over the weekend with two wins each. That brings the A’s and the Rats’ wins up to six each, with no losses since the season began. * In other North Shore fastpitch action, the Philadelphia Pizza Hitmen split a doubleheader with Jack Lonsdale Biccksox, while the Demons and Sandy Cove Spirits did the same in their two games.
