WV resident clarifies point on squabble with neighbor Dear Editor: The July 16 issue of the North Shore News carried an excellent story WV neighbors squabble over waterfront views. After reading it, I called the teporter, Maureen Curtis, to com- pliment her. She obviously resear- ched the subject thoroughly and was scrupulously fair. Regretfuily, reporters may not know when they are being ‘‘fed a line’? by the person that they in- terview last. For illustration: The very last sentence of the whole article was a direct quote from the man building the house, Stephen Fache. ‘“‘We wish the neighbors had come to us first with their concerns,”’ he said. This one sentence seems intend- ed to make the reader believe two things: *That the neighbors (and Crones, in particular) were mean spirited by complaining to West Vancouver Council behind their backs. That Fache and McBrain would have actually done some- thing if they had just been told about these concerns first. The first time we expressed our concerns to Stephen Fache was almost a year ago when he had just tecently bought the lot. The second time we really talked with them was when we invited them for a toast on New Year’s Day 1989. We noted to each other after they had left that they didn’t seem to want to talk about the plans for their new home. One word answers to our questions on that subject made us feel that we were prying. The third time was on March 9, two days after the trees had been cut down. I called Fache, told him we were dismayed, and invited DESIGN & PRINTING [7ROM CONCEPT TO FINISHED PRODUCT 2443 Marine Drive, West Vancouver 922-0247 Bowen 947-9745 _____. them over to talk about it. The fourth time was that meeting and it was also attended by alderman Pat Boname. Our concerns were made very clear. We received evasive answers and non- commital double talk so we knew then that we might just as well go ahead with our idea of a petition to council. The fifth time, on Easter weekend, I tried to reopen discus- sions, and Fache abruptly cut me off by saying if I wanted to com- municate with him about his house, I'd have to do so through his lawyer. The sixth tirme was just after we had been notified by phone from the City Clerk’s office that our petition would be put on the agen- 3 ERNITY RING GNET RINGS: fa oe - #11106. : (u jpstairs., da Monday night April 3. Because Fache has an unlisted phone number, the neighbor on the north side went to talk to him and to ad- vise him that our presentation to council would be made Monday next. Neighbors who knew of this and other meetings were angered by Fache’s attempt at obfuscation. Neighbors who didn’t know were being pitted against them. And so it is that the North Shore News carries the extra heavy burden of bringing to us all the truth. It is only on that foundation that lasting peace and community can be built.
