LOCAL SAILBOARDING — en-
thusiasts have discovercd a hot
spot that is only a 45-minute drive
from the North Shore — the place
is Squamish.

In native Indian Janguage the
world “Squamish” in fact means
“windy place,’ and the phenome-
non that causes the wind is a
thermal/venturi effect similar to
that at the famous Columbia River
Gorge.

Because Squamish can be windy
even without thermal conditions,
last year over 100 windy days were
logged. Never before could Van-
couverities boast about local high
wind conditions,

Consequently, this change of at-
titude has resulted in a change of
equipment. Novices and interme-
diates are quickly upgrading to
quality high performance
sailboards and rigs. Bic Sailboards
— well suited to Squamish condi-
tions — have captured the
Squamish market.

Over the past few years the town
of Squamish ‘has promoted the
sport of rockclimbing, and now
hopefully Squamish will respond
