36 - Wednesday, July 23, 1986 - North Shore News FOURTH PROVINCIALLY Argyle proves tops in math ARGYLE SECONDARY school’s Euclid math team placed 22nd in Canada and 4th provincially in the Euclid mathematics contest written in April. The contest is one of a series run by the Canadian Mathematics Competition, administered by the Faculty of Mathematics, Universi- ty of Waterloo. More than 800 schools competed nationally. Of this number 125 were schools from British Colum- bia. A University of Waterloo orga- nizer said, ‘‘The contest is design- ed to challenge the brightest stu- dents of mathematics and to iden- tify students with outstanding mathematical talent.’’ In the results, just released, Argyle achieved Canadian School Team Honor Roll status and the team won a medal, six certificates of distinction, seven certificates of merit, three team certificates, and various book prizes. Members of the Argyle team were Claudia Sadro, Mike Jones, Wendy Taylor, Tony Doman, Vern Griffiths, Jean Hewitt, Hashim Mitha, Paul Schulstad, William Shek and Lou Ann Men- doza. Claudia Sadro and Mike Jones both placed on the Canadian Indi- vidual Student Honor Roll fist. Sadro achieved the 23rd_ highest mask in Canada and the 4th highest in B.C. As a result of these and other achievements, three of the team members were recently awarded entrance scholarships. Claudia Sadro won the top UBC entrance award to high school graduates, the $20,000 Mount Pleasant Legion Scholarship, and Tony Doman and Wendy Taylor each earned Presidents’ Entrance Scholarships valued at $10,000. 49 3 for 2°?
