The eight-year operator of Lynnmour Gulf service sta- tion at 185 Mountain Highway said his ordeal began at approximately 3:30 p.m. September 12 when a car with four people pulled into his station. According to Klein, the car’s driver approached him and asked if he would trade $4 worth of gas for a silver dollar. “I don’t collect coins, but I know a silver dollar is worth about five bucks. So 1 figured why not?” No sooner had he: pocketed the dollar, Klein said, ‘“‘than a flock of policemen swarmed in on me, threw me against the counter of my office, and handcuffed me in front of my staff and customers.”’ The service station opera- tor said he was informed that he was being arrested on suspicion of receiving stolen property, whereupon he was escorted outside ‘‘and brutally shoved in a police car.’? After spending approx- imately three hours at North Vancouver’s RCMP station, where Klein said his requests to make a telephone call were denied, he was releas- ed. “T had an unattended child coming home from schoc! and they wouldn't even give me a ride home. | had to take a cab which ended up costing me six bucks.” Klein said he knows the officers who arrested him, because they come into his station occasionally for repairs and gas. He has a hard time con- trolling his anger over the incident: ‘‘I mean these guys know who I am. The whole - ™ thing is: totally ridiculous. There was no apology after _ it was all over. Nothing. If this is the way the RCMP in North Vancouver go about their business, well, all I can say is their mentality has sunk to a very low point.” North Vancouver RCMP Cst. The occupants of the car and the driver who offered the coin to Klein were also taken into custody Klein said that until he receives an apology or some explanation, he hes in- structed his staff to refrain from serving police officers at his station. He adds that he will discuss the whole af- fair with his solicitor. NEWS photo Stuart Davis A DISGUSTED Joe Klein holds at arm’s length the cause for his recent feud with North Vancouver RCMP.
