Ron. Beesley, . the Lynn Valley Community Association. (LVCA) | representative to the technical committee for the expansion, took _ the plans to the Nov. 8 meeting of the LVCA. He said the concerns raised there included the vandalism potential for a treliis that will screen the pool area from the car park, and whether or not. the number of parking spots provided will be adequate. : He also said that some members of the LVCA executive remain “‘yehemently opposed’’ to the in- stallation of a swimming Pool at Karen Magnussen arena, and say it would be better located in the more central Lynn Valley Park. “But where do you get the space?"’ asked Beesley. ‘‘No one wants to sive up the playing fields.”". - The leisure pool concept came about following an. August 1987 study conducted by Kevin Tishaw which showed that the lap pools in North Vancouver are of sufficient capacity to absorb any growth in usage well past the year 2000. Beesley says the leisure pool is constructed with a ‘‘system of open’ concrete boxes at one end that you blow air into,” creating a series of waves. Beesley says other leisure pools, such as the: one in. Surrey, usually have the waves ac- tivated for about 15 minutes out of each hour, More recreation news on page 12 | The poo! depth increases from six inches to six feet. Swimmers will be able to take advantage of the beach-like atmosphere by lounging on deck chairs around the pool, and by renting rafts to use in: ” the pool. “The leisure pool will fill a 2 niche,” said Beesley. ‘‘The one in / Surrey is certainly very popular.” He said the only concern . was that the Surrey pool mostly at- tracts the 10 to 15-year-old age group, while the goal of the Karen Magnussen pool is to cater to fam- ilies. Beesley says he hopes © the technical committee will be able to”. ff instruct the architect next month to finalize the ° plans, incorporating. any changes necessary. “Wes don’t want to rush this ep Regency, “North Shore. -Regency Dealert process at all,’ said North Van- ’ couver District Ald. Craig Clark | andthe chairman of the technical committee, ‘‘but at the same time we don’t want to delay the con- struction.... My target has been RON BEESLEY ..: ‘‘The leisure pool will fill a niche.*')| that we get some ground breaking in May °89.”” ‘*All these contractors’ costs are, going up like crazy,” Beesley. He, too, says he wanix the con- struction to start this spring. DOUG WORBETS, recrcation coordinator for Lyna Valley, holds up the first draft plans for the expansion of RecCentre Magnussen. When : war complete, the facility will boast a leisure pool, a complete heaha club : Se Doug Worbets, Lynn Valley's recreational coordinator, says he will put the plans on display at Karen Magnussen arena in early December, and is hoping to put them up at Lynn Valley Centre as well.
