Whistler stage set for BMX championship THE WORLD is coming to Whistler Mountain August 7-11 to take part in Canada’s first World Championships of BMX bike racing. More than 1,200 racers between the ages of five and 18 have signed up to repre- sent 18 countries in the 28 class championship which will be run on a new BMX track constructed expressly for the event which is just a five minute walk from the Whistler Town Centre. Most riders will also compete in the Kuwahara Canada Cup which will be staged in con- junction with the Worlds. In addition to the World Championship and Kuwahara Canada Cup races, there will be profes- sional BMX and skateboard demonstrations, the world premiere of a new motion picture ‘‘BMX Bandits’, a presentation by EXPO 86, rock videos for the teenagers, a large outdoor family barbecue and a Squamish Loggers’ Show. The 1,200 riders will be accompanied by another 2,000 parents, family and trainers. Another 3,000- 5,000 people are expected to attend as spectators.
