National trail Deana Lancaster News Reporter dlancaster®usnews.com DESPITE criticism, West Vancouver is following its chosen path. At Monday night's mecting, council gave final approval for the designation of the proposed routes for the Trans Canada ‘Trail with- in the district. While introducing the motion, Coun. Ken Haycock defended the municipality's decision from an article that appeared in the most ~ recent edition of Vancouver Magazine, in which columnist Mitchell Scott accused West Vancouver of thwarting the “noble” national trail initiative. It's designated a millennium project by both the fed- eral and provincial governments, and when it opens in September of this year the multi-use tail will be 16,000 kilometres long — the longest recreational wail in the world. Unlike in other participating communities, West Van's section of the trail splits into nvo routes: one for hikers and the other for cyclists and other wheeled users, As well, the hiking route has a rather conspicuous jog in it. The ail heads north into Cypress Bow! to avoid passing through British Pacific Properties’ land. “British Pacific Properties did not wish those lands to be crossed sy the trail,” said Haycock. He added that the detour is “adding quite a distance ... but it’s very scenic.” : ~ Community planner Raymond Nothstein, who was stickhan- dling the trail project for the municipality, said on Friday that decid- ing ona route was a challenge. “West Vancouver has a unique cpportuniny because of the ter- in... we already have a network of great hiking trails through the : . _ . t + _ s T _MS rate high in B.C. People with MS live a normal life span, but their quality of life can be greatly diminished. ‘Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the world. Orlandc said a genetic component coupled with our temperate ‘climate is believed to cause MS. There are also theories that a byproduct of the chicken pox virus dormant in the body after childhood may become active in adulthood in the form of MS. The MS Society of Canada estimates 50,000 Canadians have the disease. MS affects women twice as often as men. MS usually strikes between ages 20 to 40. MS rarely develops after age 50. By splitting them up we feel we're giving them each the best possible route.” As for the BPP bypass ... Nothstein said they searched for other alternatives, but a more level route would have required construc- tion ofa new bridge across Cypress Creek. “British Pacific Properties didn“t want us to go down through their land because it has the potential to affect future development there.” One of the bridges that crosses the creek is on BPP land. The other is on BC Parks land. “We spent a lot of time looking for a place where we could build a new bridge but Cypress Creck is extremely difficult to get across.” The wail committee decided to use the existing bridge in Cypress Provincial Park. Nothstein said the extra hike to get to it isn’t as bad as it looks. “On the map it looks like a really steep climb, it’s actually not. Ie’s a beautiful hike.” The detour adds approximately seven kilo- metres with an elevation gain of 200 metres. Despite the fact that it all took almost qvo years longer than North Vancouver City and District for West Vancouver to decide on its TCT route, Nothstein thinks it was all worth it. “Now we have a passable contiguous connection from Cleveland Dam to Horseshoe Bay. 1 chink what we came up with is a real asset.” od 1300 Wootrisge St. Coquitiam 526-7225 Tester” lite fou! 102 West 1st Ave. Vancouver 872-7225 — worwrackattack.com vam Solid Waste Plan Monitoring Committee The Greater Vancouver Regionai District (GVRD) invites applications from interested community and cusiness volunteers to fill two vacancies on the public Plan Monitoring Committee Members serve without remuneration 8 and represent a balance of business, professional and community interest groups.
