26 ~ North Shore News — Wednesday, July 15, 2000 Teen Avengers thank NSCU REPRESENTATIVES of North Shore Association for the Mentally Handicapped presented their Making Opportunities Happen Award to members of the North Shore Credit Union Charitable Foundation July 17. Participants of the associations’ “Teen Avengers program presented the award to give thanks to the foundation tor a grant of $10,000. The Teen Avengers program supports youth living with a disability after schoot and full time during winter, spring and summer breaks. The program emphasizes pre-employment skills, lifeskills waining, volunteer work and recreation. . The goal is to assist youth with a disability to plan for the future and support them in achieving life goals. Pre-cayployment training provides youth with preliminary insight into career opportuni- ties and the ne ry steps needed to achieve those goals, Lifeskills teaches individuals day-to- day tasks such as food preparation, bus training, budgeting and personal hygiene. A comprehen- sive recreational and social component. teaches youth the importance of a balanced lite. Often youth with a disability require some additional time to mature and gain skills necessary for a suc- cessful transition into adulthood, Additional funding is still required to help youth with disabilities.
