VAN DISTRICT Economic study gets support CONCERN ABOUT the economic future of North Vancouver has prompted members of North Van- couver District Council to express their support for a study being done on ways to improve that future. The Economic Development in Greater Vancouver study is being carried out by the management consultant firm of Stevenson, Kellogg, Ernst and Whinney. According to John Fraser of the consultant firm, ‘‘Unless (Greater) Vancouver can agree upon a coor- dinated approach and a priority with respect ta these (economic development) issues, we're going to lose our market share.’’ The study is being sponsored by the municipalities in the Greater Vancouver Regional District (in- cluding North Vancouver District) and is expected to be completed at the end of this month. Said Mayor Marilyn Baker: “We all seemed to be going our own separate ways trying to en- courage economic development and there needed to be a closer coordination between all of these parties.’’ Baker expressed some concern about the provincial government’s plan for eight ‘‘economic development’’ regions in the pro- vince: ‘‘There’s a very strong con- cern that the region in which we are a part is far too large because it’s not only the Greater Van-, couver region, it includes all the outlying areas and several other regional districts.’’ Said Ald. Ernie Crist: ‘‘There is a great need for a_ regional economic strategy and there is great need for coordination so that we not only can sell this region to countries in the Pacific Rim...but so that we also have sufficient po- litical clout to speak with one very important voice in Ottawa and Victoria.” The aim of the study is to come up with an action plan that will allow North Vancouver and other areas in’ Greater Vancouver to become more competitive while encouraging an ‘‘inter-municipal’’ approach to employment and business growth.
