Not all sunglasses
are created equal

CANADIANS DESERVE to
know if the sunglasses they buy to
protect their eyes from the sun's
rays really are effective, says the
president of the B.C. Assogiation
of Optometrists.

Dr. David Myrfield) says in-
dustry’s attempt to label sunglass
tenses for their degree of protec-
tion against harmful ultra violet
rays is causing public confusion
and may be doing more harm
than good.

“There are no legislated stand-
ards, which means many lenses
carry unclear or misleading labels,
or no labels at all,”” said Dr. Myr-
field. ‘Most labels do not list the
type or percentage of UV rays
screened, and we know of a case
where imported lenses carried
Jabels falsely claiming to protect
the eyes.

“Clearly, some kind of
legislative standards are needed.”*

With depletion of the earth's
ozone layer, eye damage could in-
crease in decades to come. Al-
though precautions can be taken,
certain people are more at risk
than others, such as those who
spend a lot of time in the sun due
to work or recreation, and those
with fair complexions or certain
health conditions.

“Given proper information,
those at risk can easily protect
themselves,”? said Dr. Myrfield.
‘But with an unreliable labelling
system for sunglasses, you might
be harming yourself.

“Sunglasses allow the pupil to
dilate, and if there is not enough
UV protection, your eyes will ab-
sorod more radiation than they
wuuld without sunglasses. Even
the three-level labelling system
voluntarily adopted by U.S. in-

dustry would be better than
nothing.”
To minimize the risk, Or. Myr-

field suggested some practical ad-
vice for people spending u lot of
time in the sun. ‘For starters,
caps and wide-brimmed hats are
often overlooked,’ he said.

“With the current fashion craze
over sunglasses, it’s wise to look
for quality, too. They don’t need
to cost a lot — some cheaper
glasses give good protection, while
some expensive pairs don’t, which
is another argument for introduc-
ing standards. **

Sunglasses protect against three
types of glare, and certain colored
Jenses are more appropriate for
some individuals than others.
Photochromic lenses, which dark-
en in sunlight, offer a sunglass ef-
feet, but may not be suitable sor
certain types of work, Optome-
trists will prescribe them if they
match a patient’s vocational and
recreational needs.

“A proper pair of sunglasses
should screen 7S per cent of visi-
ble light and 95 te [00 per cent of
ultra violet fight," he said. cf
