pe: BON Ea Is Ae arr Sk a es Wood fire gives reader warm glow Dear Editor: I would like to respond to a letter written by Steven Davis calling for a ban on woodstoves. If Mr. Davis is really concerned about wood smoke air pollution, he should take note of the annual fall burn of “woodwaste” done by the forest industry. This “woodwaste” as described by the forests ministry and the forest industry includes branches to full size logs, ranging from a few feet long to well over 40 feet up to three feet in diarneter and amounts to hundreds of tons of wood which goes up in smoke. The reasons for this burning? “Historic way of doing it”, “esthetics”, “Forest Practices le” and “Weevils.” . And waere does this smoke go? ’. If Mr. Davis had had his head out of the sarid on Oct. 28, 29 and 30 of last year, he would have noticed how smoky the Vancouver area was. This smoke was drifting south from the Randy Sxolemann Wilderness Area otherwise known as TFL 38 operated by International Forest Products. I know, because I was hiking in the area. . Mr, Davis should set his sights on 2 real problem and get this “woodwaste” burning stopped. The amount of wood burned during this fall practice far exceeds the combined total of local él burning and woodstove smoke. T enjoy my efficient air-tight wood stove which I installed and had inspected by a North Vancouver District inspector .thrée. years ago. And yes, I really enjoy getting up on a cold morning, tramping through the snow to get- my wood, ; g my house Dear Editor: I feel compelled to respond to the “adver- tisement” placed in the Feb. 2 North Shore News by the union of the West Van Fire Department. Their union would have us believe that West Van firemen spend their days and nights rush- ing from canyon rescues to hazardous material spills with barely a moment to stop and pull some poor victim from a burning car wreck and perform CPR on him. Despite this hectic schedule, they still want to respond to all ambulance calls in West Van. Well, the purpose of advertising is to sell a product, not to bore people with facts and fig- ures, What the firemen aren’t telling people is the municipality of West Van already participates in the fire department first responder program. That means firemen arc atready being dis- patched to medical emergencies where their ic first aid or rescue skills can be employed Lions Gate toll is justified would be used by North Shore residents to a large degree should be paid for by them. The Island highway i+ used by many people who do not live in the area end is also an Don’t Let Dear Editor: Re: Feb. 2 News viewpoint (N- toll). ; ! disagree. More and more we have to realize that the user must pay, thus a new bridge which prior to the arrival of an ambulance staffed by paramedics. The paramedics then render any Necessary treatment and transport the patient to a hospital. Ifa 9-1-1 medical call falls outside of these parameters, firemen are not dispatched. The decision to send first responders is made by an Emergency Medical Dispatcher, who is also a paramedic, in accordance with strict pro- tocols established by the Emergency Health Services Commission. Sending firemen to med- ical calls outside of these protocols would be an inappropriate use of this resource. T think the citizens of West Van would be better served by an honest accounting of the fire department’s operating budget and call vol- ume statistics, than the shameless, self-promo- tion displayed in their “advertisement.” I don’t know of any other emergency service in the community that actually needs to solicit more work. The plastic bags and contents have been accu- mulating for the past year now. 1 walk regularly in and around my neighborhood and I am disgusted by the sight. Do the people who “Conscientiously” pick up after their pets really believe by magic the bags will disappear from the sidewalks and trails? I can’t believe there are so many unthinking pet owners out there. It is actually better to leave the matter on the ground and at feast let the rain wash it away. It’s in the bag forever otherwise. Please take the bag and contents with you. I do believe the bylaw requires removal. E.
