By the Middle Ages the
flower had become an impor-
tant motif in ant and heraldry.
Today it still appears on the
coats of arms for both France
and the province of Quebec.

In Britain the lily became
venerated as a sacred flower
assuciated with the Virgin
Mary, thus the — famous
“Madonna lily” (Liaum can-
didum) was often planted ino
convent gardens.

With its large nodding
white flower and the hint of
light green on the outside
petals it is still often used to
decorate churches.

While the medieval nuns
had to be content with the
Madonna lily, years of cross
breeding and cultivation have
created more than 80 species
of lilies and thousands of
hybrids, in an enormous vari-
ety of dazzling colors and
exotic shapes for the flower
arranger.

Yet despite this success the
creation of a new lily is still a
lengthy and risky process.

First there is the delicate
‘mating’ operation of remov-
ing pollen from the ‘father’s
stamen, and then placing it on
the pistils of a different
‘mother’ variety. Later the
grower will cut the flowers
and hang them upside down in
a drying room. After some
time the seeds start to fall out,
