Student crime fighters NORTH VANCOUVER high school students who have an interest in police work have an opportunity to find out first shand if fighting crime is the career for them. RCMP detachments and Lower Mainland school districts have formed the RCMP Youth Academy, ‘an eight-day, work experience pro- gram which will expose students toa ‘wide variety of police topics and practical training, Fify students will be selected to attend the Youth Academy at the Canadian Forces Base in Chilliwack from April 20 to 27, They will receive instruction on various aspects of Canadian law, including traffic enforcement, search warrants, arrest procedures, self-defense tech- niques, forensic identification and courtroom trials. They will also par- ticipate in the investigation of a mock murder throughout the weck. Applications have been supplied to school counsellors and any stu- dent wishing to apply must meet the following criteria: * 16 to 18 years of age; ¢ in good standing in all classes; ¢ have good attendance record; ¢ display willingness to work; ¢ be sponsored by school staff; * be physically fit, Applicants must also pass a secu- rity clearance and interview. There is a student fee of $100 which will purchase uniforms for the students. All other costs, including transportation, lodging, meals and supplies are covered by the program.
