A high volume of runoff water is believed to be related to a landslide in the Orchid Creek drainage area of the watershed. ‘The Capilano watershed which provides about 40% of ithe total GVRD water supply was closed recently as a source of drinking water due to a slide and high water turbidity. : “2 A-GYRD spokesperson seid the cloudy water coming from taps is safe to drink. NORTH VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL By Martin Millerchip That's: the bottom line of Monday’s | decision by . North Vancouver District Council to reverse an Oct. 16 decision to remove the lacrosse - box at Ross: Road Elementary School. 5 Debating the issue for the second time in three weeks and for at least the fifth time this year. council sup- ported the retention of the existing box on the basis of community sup- port, economic realities and the lack” _ of drop-in recreational opportunities in Lynn Valley. Coun. Janice Harris offered “hum- ble apologies” for getting lost during the Oct.’ 16 debate which committed council to the construction of a multi- purpose sports court at Karen Magnussen Arena. User groups support the creation of the; new facility but some have questioned how council chose to override its existing advisory com- mitiees and prioritize the $222,528 ahead of other capital needs, Harris’ motion to retain the box Was supported by Coun, Don Bell, Coun: Ernie Crist, Coun. Pamela Goldsmaith-Jones and .Coun. Pat Munroe. The final clause of her motion retums the debate to North Vancouver School District 44. It) states < that’ notwithstanding council support for the retention of the box “if the school board, as the owner of the property, make the final decision to: remove or. substantially alter; the box they bear those costs accordingly.” The board wrote to couneil in December 1994 favoring the removal of the lacrosse box but asking: for council's position on the request. The board suggested council seek the views of the Lacrosse Association - and theRecreation Commission. Both supported retention of the box but council was also lobbied by a large and well- -organized percentage of school parents in favor of a re- designed playground facility. Said Coun. Emie Crist: “We have been dragged into a war which was not! ours to fight. The school board stayed out of it and we accepted all the flak.” Your child will gain one full ade level . in 36 hrs.
