Nothing wrong with Hillside

Dear Editor:

It seemed unbelievable that
Hillside Middle School should be
demolished to finance a new
schoo! at Caulfeiid, with an anti-
cipated shortfall of several miltion
to be found, evidently by the tax-
payer.

What a totally crass idea! Are
we not in a recession?

Not wanting a tax increase, !
visited Hillside schoo! to see why
this 30-year-old school was now
deemed enly fit for the junkyard.

Are we foolish enough to
believe buildings 30 years old are
outmoded, unfit for our children
in West Vancouver while North
Vancouver still has Queen Mary,
its first school?

Five objections have been made
to this building: too many stairs;
an iltl-placed library; inflexible
student grouping;.a small playing
field; and difficult supervision.

1 was shown around, up and
down stairs — no problem for
me, surely not for active teens.

The library was in a basement
which I thought reasonably quiet,
away from the bustle of the halls.

The ‘inflexible student  ar-
Ttangements’’ I did not under-
stand. The grass playing field is
said to be too short for regulation
size. if the tennis courts and two
parking areas in front were com-
bined, the right space might be
achieved,

But sports isn’: the main con-

cern of a school. The learning sit-
uation must be adequate. | viewed
with pleasure the excellent theatre
area, the computer area, the
well-arranged music room and
two gymnasiums -—~ full-sized,
well-equipped, as well as a weight
room.

Supervision difficulties were not
evident. This may weil be a dif-
ferent story if the students found
themselves across from the
Caulfeiid shopping mall.

Surely these features more than
compensate for small imperfec-
tions — who has everything?
