I've never owned a boat before, and would like to know how to go about transferring the title of ownership. Do i need a licence to operate a boat, and if so, where would I go to get it? What about registration and insurance? Answer: Before buying a boat it’s a good idea to do a lien search, to ensure that there are no debts owing on the boat, which you, as the new owner would in- herit. As with purchasing @ sed car, a lien search can be done by going to a Motor Vehicle Branch office, listed under the Solicitor General Playland classic draws coaster enthusiasts THE AMERICAN Coaster En- thusiasts (ACE) came to. the Pacific National Exhibition to ride Playland’s famed wooden roller coaster. A Vancouver landmark since 1958, Playland’s renowned roller coaster has lifted the spirits of thousands of thrill seekers and is - fated one of the top ten wooden roller coasters in North America. Built by Carl Phare, the world’s foremost builder of wooden coasters, this ride quickly goes from pleasant to relentlessly wild after the initial drop and turn. Thousands of inquiries and com- pliments are received from roller coaster buffs each year. Visitors to the annual fair can also take a simulated ride on the coaster as it stars in Shane Lun- ny’s film The Ultimate Roller Coaster, shown daily in the old Armed Forces Pavilion, just east of the Pacific Coliseum. The Vancouver filmmaker combines a ride on the coaster with spec- tacular scenery of British Colum- bia, international locations, dare-devil photography and an awesome soundtrack to make the high energy five-minute film. With the classic wooden roller coaster disappearing quickly from § amusement parks across the con- tinent Vancouverites and their visitors are extremely lucky to have such an exciting attraction ir their own back yard. The licence numbers are a method of identification of province and port. “*K,’* for in- stance, refers to the province of B.C. and the port number which follows it defines the licensing port. There is a penalty, enforced by the RCMP, for not properly displaying your licence number on your boat. To perform a Transfer of Title you'll need to pay a visit to the Ship's Registry office. There you will file a transfer form, which is on the back of the current licence. If the form has been misplaced, ask for a Small Vessel Licence Application Form. a Ww You are required to pay 6% provincial sales tax on the pur- chase. You do this by submitting copies of the bill of sale and the licence application form along with a payment to the Consumer Taxation Branch at 500-605 Rob- son Street, Vancouver, V6B 533, or by calling 660-4524. Formal registration of a vessel is usually done for much farger craft. The procedure is a detailed one that involves producing a Marine Bill of Sale, a Declaration of Ownership, the appointment of a vessel manager, and the choos- ing of a name. You would also be required to have the vessel measured by a qualified surveyor.
