F YOU really want to mM look a fool, show up at _ the dock suitcases! with four By Barbara McCreadie News Columnist The days of a different gown and tiara every evening are gone with Fred and Ginger, so pack sensibly. Days aboard are very casual — shorts, slacks, and T-shirts are all you need aside from a cou- ple of bathing suits. Bring along a cover-up for your suits as they are not appreciated in the in- terior public areas. Bring casual shoes with soles that grip — some of the exterior staircases are steep (you can avoid these, but they’re handy shortcuts) and decks may be wet. BE MODEST When visiting foreign ports it’s safest to wear something modest. Many countries’ residents have an aversion to the sight of unclothed flesh — particularly female — and you may get treated like trash. If you intend to visit any cathedrals bring along a head covering — some still demand this. If a mosque is on the agen- da (highly unlikely just now) bring 2. pair of socks or slippers — you must remeve your shoes inside. IN THE EVENING Evening wear is much simpler than it used to be. Most even- ings you wear just what you'd wear to a fine restaurant at home — shirts and ties for the men, a dress for the ladies. The exceptions are two — the Captain's gala and the costume party. For the gala, a dark suir is fine for men but if you hap- pen to own a tux, bring it — a few men do. Wednesday, February 27, 1991 - North Shore News - 15 neers Zee For the ladies, a short cocktail dress is all you need. If your cruise is longer than one week you might like to bring pwo — one gala per week is the usual schedule. COSTUMES If you have costumes that you love to wear, bring them along (check first to make sure this is part of the program). If not, don't worry about it. Participa- tion isn’t mandatory and many people simply applaud. The best news comes last — many of the ships have install- ed laundromats. Ask the agent about this when you're booking and pack lightly.
