Feds, Foundation to cooperate FEDERAL MINISTER of Com- munications Marcel Masse recently signed a memorandum of under- standing with North Vancouver- based Neil Squire Foundation to facilitate the development of new information and communications technologies to help the disabled achieve independence at home and in the workplace. The local foundation and the federal Department of Com- munications will be working together on research and develop- ment projects. Some of the projects the federal department is interested in include the development of a voice recog- nition technology system, based on technology developed by the Speech Research Centre of the Na- tional Research Council in Ottawa; the development of the world’s first integrated line of access swit- ches; and natural language devel- opment. The technologies to be devel- oped will directly benefit many of the more than three million Cana- dians with physica! disabilities as well as the country’s growing el- derly population. The Neil Squire Foundation is a national, non-profit organization pioneering the development and application of modern technology to assist persons with limited phys- ical ability to be more independent and to better realize their poten- tial. The foundation's administrative headquarters are located in Deep Cove. HAYLEY is an assistant manager at a clothing store who spends her spare time skiing and cycling. A trip to Europe for her is upcoming. Lanskail assured everyone Monday that council's motion was one of principle only. “It does not attack anyone,’* he said. Edward Guy of the Ambleside and Dundarave Ratepayers Association had written a letter earlier expressing his concerns that the GVRD resolution might be taken as censuring — legislative bodies in Ontario that have passed English-only statutes, rather than speaking to the ‘‘greater evil” that provoked them. He referred to Quebec’s passage of Bill 178. The GVRD resolution acknowl- edges that Canada was created by two linguistic groups, stemming from either an English or French heritage, and stresses the impor- tance of working towards a coun- try in which all Canadians, ir- respective of origin, can feel com- fortable in every region. The GVRD executive committee said it was important for leaders to speak up in support of these prin- ciples, as ‘‘we live in a period characterized by sharp, and some- times rancorous debate with regard to constitutional and language questions which encourages divisive forces and threatens the unity and very existence of the na- tion.”’ GROUSE ES _ ADULT ALL DAY 4 == SKI PASSES < only °1599 save sg Available from: * Chevron Service Station, Capilano Rd., North Vancouver & Three Way Self Service Chevron, 660 W. 3rd, North Vancouver P An exotic Safari into the heatt of fine East African indian Cuisine AN INVITATION TO TT] Taste The Difference! per eet eet eww em meee eer ey Bring in this ad for ONE FREE § DINNER ENTREE When a second dinner entree of equal or greater value is purchased {up to $10.00) Not valid with any other promotional discount.
