A NEW public opinion poll says
most Greater Vancouver residents
are prepared to pay extra through
a new, one-cent-a-litre gasoline tax
to improve highways and roads.

Key findings in a province-wide
poll of 601 British Columbians
conducted by United Communica-
tions Research for the B.C. Road
Builders and Heavy Construction
Association include:

61.2 per cent of
Greater Vancouver
residents polled
support the idea of
a gas tax for
improved highway
safety.

® A total of 61.2 per cent sup-
ported the idea of a new, dedicated
tax of one cent a litre on gasoline
to be spent exclusively on improv-
ed safety on B.C. highways; 36.1
per cent opposed it; 2.7 per cent
had no opinion.

© In all, 65.4 per cent of survey
respondents said they support the
provincial government’s proposed
new $10 billion transportation
plan, called Freedom to Move,
which provides for increased
spending on highways and bridges
during the next 10 years. The plan
was opposed by 12.2 per cent; a
further 23 per cent were not aware
of the plan, and less than two per
cent had no opinion.
