TALK RADIO fead Eric Bogosian all talk, little action. Talk Radic * (Cineplex Odeon) Rated Mature (at the Granville, Park & Tilford, Statin Square Cinemas) RADIO: YOU'VE heard the talk. Now see the movie. Barry Champlain (Eric Bogo- sian), a cocky ex-salesman, has filled the Dallas night air with con- iroversial chatter for the last five years. His talk show on KGAB Radio is about to be syndicated and, because he wasn’t consulted, he is fuming. But then, when isn’t he? He’s definitely a Morton Downey Jr. ““A’’-type. The “shock jock’’ antagonizes his callers — the lonely, the psychos, the rednecks — with a string of abuse and, in return, gets death threats, a drug-fiend groupie and - ratings. Barry doesn’t limit his anger to faceless voices either. Everyone at the station, from the boss on down to the engineer, is on the receiving end of his sarcasm. But he saves his best shots for the women in his life. He wheedles his estranged wife, Ellen (Ellen Greene) to fly from Chicago to isin him for his national premiere, and then ver- bally assaults her on the air when his coast-to-coast debut is delayed. Eric performs the lead (written by him for him) with a restless energy that becomes monotonous. The movie is based on the book, “Talked to Death: The Life and Murder of Alan Berg’ so it’s no surprise when Barry signs off for [tis a surprise, though, that anyone would want to make a movie about a radio show. In an attempt to make it visually interesting, the broadcast booth looks more like ar: 2xecutive boardroom, with a huge console and a spectacular view. The cam- era is either relentlessly circling the actors or zooming in for close-ups. So close, you can tell who wears contacts and who has open pores.
