Darbyshire, chief instructor with the North Vancouver Shito-Ryu Hosukai Club, took the gold medal in the middleweight black belt division, while fellow club member Wallace won the bronze medal in the heavyweight black belt divi- sion, in winning the five-man team fighting event, the British Colum- bia squad — including the two North Vancouver club menibers — topped the ranks among teams from all over the western pro- vinces. An international invitational competition between the Japanese national team and Canada last month saw Darbyshire capture a silver medal in the middleweight division, defeating former world champion Sadao Tajima. North Vancouver Shito-Ryu club members Darbyshire and Ron Bagley represented British Colum- bia in the multi-team competition, which saw B.C. lose to Japan in a 3-2 decision. PACED BY a pair of goals by Kel- ly Lawrence and Dan Payne, the high-flying North Shore Winter Club Flames rolled to their 11th consecutive victory, doubling the Grandview Steelers 8-4 in West Coast Junior Hockey League ac- tion Nov. 21. In the early going, however, the Flames’ streak seemed destined to be frustrated by red-hot Steeler goaltending. With the Flames pressing and dominating play right from the opening whistle, the Steelers scored two quick goals against the run of the game to take a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the game. But 24% minutes later, at the 6:32 mark, the first of four Flame power-play goals got the homctown team untracked as Lawrence combined with Ken Say- age and Dave Port to leave the Flames trailing by one after one period while outshooting the Steelers 20-5. In a fast-paced second period with good end-to-end action, the Flames added two more markers while holding the Steelers scoreless. Lawrence picked up his second goal of the night seven minutes in- to the period, sccring again on the power-play, this time from Payne and Savage to knot the score at two. Andrew Merilees added another from Port with six minutes re- maining, for a 3-2 lead.
