Buses stop at the main gate —
about every half-hour — and
return to the main station in about
half an hour.

During WW II, Jersey (and all
the other Channel Islands) was oc-
cupied by the Germans. They
built, using slave labor, a huge
underground military hospital. It’s
an immense series of caverns tun-
nelled into the rock with some un-
finished parts so you can see the
job of work involved.

Jersey has restored the hospital
and it is open to the public as a
museum. This wasn’t quite as easy
as it may sound. The hatred of the
Germans by the locals was so in-
tense that at the end of the war,
everything left behind was
ruthlessly dumped into the sea.

There are two ways to get to
Jersey — by ferry from Port-
smouth or Weymouth and by air.
I’m not sure just what the sched-
ules will be for this year but if you
choose the ferry, try for a night
crossing.

The trip takes about eight hours
so it’s better to sleep it away than
waste a day. There are some two-
berth cabins available but they're
usually fully booked. But they
always have some cancellations
and there’s a knack to getting one.

Let one of your party struggle
with the baggage and get the most
fleet-footed to scamper ahead of
all the other passengers, board the
ship and run to the purser’s office.
In this department I think I hold
the record for the number of firsts
on the cabin request list — and
I’ve always got space.
