38 - Sunday, January 11, 1987 - North Shore News North Shore malls cash in| jon Xmas} THE FINAL figures will not be in until mid-January, but the managers of the North Shore’s four largest shopp- ing malls say they had a profitable Christmas. Contributing Writer A News telephone survey Dec. 30 indicated that consumer spen- ding in December beran slowly but rose quickly after the first week and peaked in the two days previous to Christmas. Capilano Mall manager Gary Leaman said, ‘‘Our revenues are way, way up over last year and it has to come from someone else.”” Earlier this year Capilano Mall management redeveloped and ex- panded the mall at a cost of $30 million. The mall now has 109 shops, up from approximately 40, and a day care customers’ children. “We've now got 26 ladies wear stores, up from three or four,” Leaman said. ‘‘We used to be a smaller mali but we’re a real com- petitor now.”’ He said the Christmas season got off to a slow start but ‘the last few weeks were a marathon (of consumer spending).”’ Most of the shopping occurred on evenings and weekends, Leaman added. Park Royal mall manager Hugh Anderson said sales at the West Vancouver shopping centre were strong and added that many mall shops opened for the first time this Boxing Day, attracting large crowds. All the larger North Shore malls were open on Boxing Day. Lynn Valley Centre manager Lynn Warwick said Christmas 1986 was better than Christmas 1985 in overall sales volume, but was surprised that no single item sold incredibly well, like Cabbage Patch Dolls did last year. Lonsdale Quay Market assistant manager Patricia Moreau said the Quay appeared to have had a very profitable first Christmas. “People finally found us,” Moreau said of the new, multi- shop development at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue. “The merchants at Lonsdale Quay add that extra touch,’’ she said of the small speciality shops. “Everything else is so automated now.” Moreau said the Quay’s market share should grow steadily now. “The sky’s the limit.’’ Moreau added Quay merchants did not expect to suffer through the post-Christmas slump common to most retailers.
