$2 - Sunday, June 23, 1985 - North Shore News q a ot “We are capable of delivering a quality of care far in excess of our ability to pay for that Quality.” dohn Borthwick, LGH President * Hilary Clark * Chairman, ” North and’ a * West Vancouver Seacihy “yds Hospital Society Chairman's. Report 1984 - 85 This past year has been a‘challenging one for Lions Gate ‘Hospital. We are indeed fortunate in the resourcefulness and management skills of our bdard-and hospital administration that have’ made it possible for us to cope with the situation f being underfunded for the health care services that we pro- - vide’ for the North Shore community Sree ‘» LGH has a reputation for innovative and farsighted method care. Several years ago, our Medical Daycare programs and Day Surgery iacilities were pioneering steps in providing alter- - : o) r : expensive Inpatient hospital care and have since pro- © ‘Ved invaluable tn enabling us to maintain our high level and “quality of’service, fe :. We'continue to develop more-effective and more efficient ‘modes of health care delivery. An excellent example is the Car- diac Early Discharge Service that evolved from a pilot project ‘at LGH. The patients benefit from returning to their normal . lives more quickly and badly needed acute care beds are made available for other patients. ae ‘LGH has.also taken_a leadership role in emphasizing the hospital as a centre contributing to “wellness” in the community -rather than just the traditional concept of dealing with sickness and making repairs, Our highly successful tecture/discussion Series on Effective Parenting is part of this outreach into the community which encourages people to take responsibility for “developing and maintaining physical, emotional and mental health. The programs have also been shown on Channel.10 and are’ available on loan from the hospital: = Even’ with the problems caused by the financial restraints, we were able to complete two projects that enhance the sur- roundings. for both patients and staff. The opening of the Evergreen House extension has provided 125 badly-needed extended care beds. ‘The beautiful interior design with its warm comfortable ‘atmosphere makes a pleasant’ home for the “I “esidents: The. same’ designer has transformed the gray, ‘cramped institution-like area in'the old original part of the hospital that houses the Psychiatric Unit into a light open plan ‘that lifts the spirits and provides an efficient working space. ‘* T can not overstate my admiration for the skills and the ded- “tcation ‘demonstrated by the members of the Board, the “hospital administration and all the hospital employees in their “determination to maintain the high quality health care LGH ‘prides. Itself on. ‘The expertise in planning and management of John Borthwick and his staff and-the unique and varied ’ skills provided by the volunteer board members form a valuable partnership. And this year | was pleased to attend the first annual Employee Recegnition Luncheon, part of a program to acknowledge more concretely the outstanding contributions . of.our hospital’s employees. .- - Each year that I have served on the LGH Board of Trustees “we ‘greet the end of the fiscal year with a sigh of relief that we have made it through and tum towards the coming year with some apprehension. Underfunding seems to be a chronic condition and we know both operating costs and demands for services will increase, Yet there are positive aspects as well. . There fs no denying that the need to be innovative has brought out the best in'us. And there is evidence that attitudes in the community about the role of the individual in promoting and maintaining health are slowly changing. We must promote this growing ‘awareness of nutrition, fitness, emotional health, moderation ‘in the use of stimulants, responsibility on the highways. The community and hospital can work together to encourage an aware and responsible lifestyle for the residents of the North Shore that will allow the concentration of health care funds into essential areas. ~ s' s ‘of anticipating and meeting challenges in the delivery of health | * Financial summaries are extracted from statements reported on by our auditors MacGillivray and Co.
