my A@ - Sunday, September 2, 1984 - North Shore News Strictly personal by Bob Hunter O. IT IS THE EVE of ‘the election. The Liberals lie at our feet, bleeding horribly, awaiting only the quick thrust of a ballot pencil driven through their hearts to put them out of their misery. l intend to bring my own pen- cil sharpener into the booth, just to make sure. A tingle of political sadism grips me. It’s sure gonna feel good, driving in that pencil. As 1 contemplate = this wonderful act of fevenge call- ed voting, I find myself thinking back over a few of the more glaring Liberal atrocities that have turned me, normally a mild- mannered, left-leaning eco- hawk, into somebody who’s going to vote with a mad laugh for the official opposition. The face of Bob Kaplan, eyes narrow, face puffy with arrogance, flickers before me. Ah _ yes, Kaplan, the solicitor-general who should have been charged with treason for creating a ‘‘civilian’’ secret police force immune from parliamentary control, free to bug and loot the homes of citizens whose civil rights have been gang- raped. I see Monseigneur Trudeau in the House of Commons on the last day, ranting that he would never hft a finger to correct the injustice of the wartime roundup of Cana- dian citizens of Japanese descent. Why not? We all knew. Trudeau had wielded the War Measures Act himself. And he never really recovered from those few giddy weeks of being an actual dietator in a police state. I trace his real corruption to that. Yes. And then there’s his paradise-lost Charter of Rights and Freedoms, a Magna Carta fashioned out of loopholes. How could any document that begins with the word ‘‘whereas’’ ever be trusted? Look at the charter carefully and you notice there is a massive Catch-22 built in- te-the core of its memory bank, so to speak. Every single one of its inalienable rights can be alienated at the whim of the federal cabinet, which means the Prime Minister, by virtue of a sim- ple order-in-council. It is the imperial powers of Ottawa that have been cast in cement by the Trudeau Charter, not the freedoms of the citizenry. 1 remind you that the book simply listing the code numbers of all the federal statutes that govern our lives is six inches thick! When I think about the Liberals, 1 think about the Keith Davey/Jimmy Coutts strategy of ambushing Joe Clark in Ontario with the promise of cheap gas, writing Western Canada off as a dead zone. Great realpolitik! But unforgiveable. I still smart from the insult of coming home from the polling station to find out the election was over by the time they counted the ballots in Kenora. Let’s Politics not kid ourselves. is aS emotional as family. Snubs are felt forever. Ignored invitations remembered. For all the sur- face apathy, I know from talking to people that this is the most emotional election in living memory. Fingering my pencil sharpener, I think about Sim- ma Holt on the parole board. ntermediate and Advanced level _ ourses are available during the day — ‘or evening. a “Also, reading and Writing courses at © ‘Intermediate and Advanced levels. ‘will’ be held: For more information | “call 986-1911, local 414 or come to ! room P24, Lynnmour campus.
