Dear Editor: Your paper printed, with a heading implying § editorial support, a misinformed letter from Sue Cook attacking our accuracy. Here is the documentation for our assertions: @ Cut legal aid services funding. The provincial government funding to the Legal Services Society is down two million at a time of increased de- mand (Chairman D.A. ’ Silvesides’ letter to a Van- couver daily, Aug. 8). As a result, 13 Legal Services Society staff had to be laid off, and 5 offices were clo (Vancouver daily, Aug. 31). @ Abolish rent controls. All rent control will be abolished. Tenants may ‘‘ap- peal’’ rent increases in.excess of 15% only and if the rent is below $500 per month, and only until June 30, 1984. e Eliminate post partum counselling. This seven-year old pro- gram of MHR is to be ter- minated October 31, 1983. Four full-time two part-time staff, 30 volunteers and the present and future clients are affected. " @ Close the residential treat- ment centre for sexually abused children. | Ninety percent of the 4-12 year olds in Mary Hill residential treatment | ‘centre — have been sexually abused. The Centre is: "scheduled to, close before ‘next’ April, ‘and -- the MHR has. told ‘the. staff. that there aré no plans to have the: centre. run by a private group. The minister announced Aug. 5 thai funding ends March 31, 1984. She has ap- parently expressed the hope that a private group will con- tinue the service (Vancouver daily, Aug. 5). e Volunteer co-ordinators. Ms. Cook doesn’t unders- tand that these are paid staff who screen, train and assign © volunteers. They are especially important when staff are being cut and the Ministry is hoping that volunteers will take over programs. We understand why Ms. Cook was filled with » disbelief. We too were in- credulous that our govern- ment would bring down so many anti-woman measures. The North Shore Women’s Centre is composed primarily of hardworking volunteers who are all very concerned about the disastrous effects that the proposed measures will have on the lives of women and children. If Sue Cook is interested in checking our clippings, or just finding out more about us, we invite her to drop in to the Centre in the North Building, Delbrook Centre, open 9-4 Monday to Friday. Bev.
