MS travel C15 - Sunday, March 27, 1983 - North Shore News A B.C. Place with slot machines - THE RECEPTION provided by the Reno- Sparks Visitors’ Bureau to the Pacific Western- Silverwing group was impressive. sent a fine represent- tive, B.C. Minister of Human Resources, Grace McCarthy. Her performance was well, elegant and she looked every inch of what we'd expect of a Deputy Premier. A lot of fine words were said and the day was declared, “boeing — Pacific Western Day” in Reno. We were treated to a magnificent reception at the Eldorado Hotel-Casino, and if the hors d'oeuvres they served were typical of the quality of the food in the hotel, it’s a fine place to eat. Later, we were treated to the “Hello. Hollywood, Hello” show at the M.G.M. Grand . First, that's the largest casino I've ever seen in my life - sort of B.C. Place with slot machines. Because it’s out of town, near the airport, I've bypassed it on many trips. I'd heard good reports about the stage show but always was too wrapped-up in losing money to go look. For overwhelming size it's unique. Where else could a show start with a full-size 737 jetliner wheeling on stage Canada- by Barbara in size and spectacle for two hours? Picture a cast of 200 dancers, singers, acrobats, jugglers and trapeze per- formers mixed in with special effects like two full- size waterfalls, cars, horses, space machines and some of the most extravagant costumes imaginable. For me, it was just too much. In fact, I'll probably never go to another extravaganza again. I was left with the feeling that it spoiled any other show, nothing is left undone. Oddly, there are some sec- tions of the show that are pure, crashing boredom. Juggling acts can be in- McCreadie ee with everything going uphill teresting - if they're brief. This one wasn't. A cross- bow is a frightening weapon and when one is being aimed at another human being, boredom is mixed with hor- ror. An Argentine Gaucho dance act was good, but again, far too long. I'm told that the culpnt here ts the union - demanding three long breaks for the dancers and singers. Whatever, I wish the “breaks” had in- cluded many fast acts in- stead of the prolonged ones. The prime rib dinner was excellent however I could have fed four starving cats on the piece of meat | couldn't eat. Don't go to a cocktail reception and eat the appetizers before going to the dinner show at the M.G.M. Drinks are fairly ex- pensive, for Reno - a friend and I each had a martini - bill $5.65. Do your drinking at thé tables - for free, plus tip. There is no dress rule, despite the fact that this is the classiest show in Reno. Lots of men in sport shirts. ¥Fd-recommend -a—visit to the show as a finale to a Reno visit. While I was waiting at the Vancouver airport for the tour group to assemble, I went for coffee in the third level cafeteria. Right ahead of me was a young couple with breakfast trays. When I heard the cashier demand $13.05 I choked on my cof- fee and took a quick count of the items on the trays. Japan coming to N.V. She had one bran muffin, a scoop of scrambled eggs and a cup of coffee. He had one doughnut, scrambled eggs. three sausages and a couple of slices of bacon plus a pet ef tea. No juice. No toast. No hash-browns. No fruit. Outrageous! If you're planning to drive to Reno. off-season, good timing can save you quite a bit of money. First, plan to be there Sunday through Thursday, avoiding the weekend. Many hotels are offering room specials on a first-come basis (no reserva- tions) for as little as $20 dou- ble in first class accommoda- tion. Since these rooms go quickly, plan your arrival before noon on Sunday. se Three clubs (at least) offer to change Canadian dollars at 10% - the Cal-Neva, the Comstock (linked to the Cal- Neva with some dual owners) and the Eldorado. The trick here is amounts. At the tables, you can usual- ly change a $100 bill, pro- viding you're playing. For slot machine coins, the most that they'll take is $20 at the Eldorado and “one bill” at the Cal-Neva..
