Al6 - Wednesday, January 20, 1982 - North Shore News WHISTLER-BLACKCOMB LINKED BY NEW TOWN The not-so-good old days when skiers referred to giant Whistler Montain, 120 km North of Vancouver, in British Columbia, as all skiing and little else are history now. A new era has dawned and what a skier's dream it is! Ski-wise, they’ve added a second mountain, Black- comb, and together, the two mountains side by side offer a range of terrain that would satisfy any buff. The real jewel in the crown, oddly enough, is the new ski village smack in between. The situation is somewhat unique in ski area development. 2 The lack of base facilities in previous years allowed the architects to design from scratch and build all at once from the gound up. The chance to coordinate new facilities without having to incorporate a hodgepodge of etisting development was a unique opportunity. The planners took full advantage of the situation. Whistler Village is located at the end of the valley between Whistler and Blackcomb. The lift system for either side converges on the communal base lodge and allows access to both mountains right from town. The Village Square, competed in 1980, very successfully conveys the cosy and timeless elegance you would expect to find in a centunies old Alpine village. An abbreviated list of the Square's tenants conveys the image well enough. The Blackcomb Lodge offers a nice array of amenities including 72 studio and studio/loft units, fully equipped kitchens, sauna, whirlpool and pool plus Russell’s Restaurant and the brass Rail Bar and Lounge. Russell’s Restaurant is recommended. Then there's Stoney's, another fine restaurant fronting on the Square with Clab 10, a second storey dance and nightspot just around the corner on Village Stroll. Other nearby lounges and discos include the Mountain House Cabaret for late nighters and the copper- sheathed walls and pillars of Tapley’s Pub, a favored spot for residents who enjoy convivial conversation, a stein of suds and a game of darts. On the practical side, the Square encompasses a drugstore, post office, hardware and grocery store, a ski shop, real estate office, a travel agency and a host of other shops including The Gourmet Bakery & Fine Foods ¢manating mouthb- watering aromas even as you walk by. While the street level is taken up almost entirely by shops and business en- terprises, the second and third floors of most buildings are privately owned and uniquely designed con- dominiums. Whistler Mountain, with the highest lift-serviced vertical drop (1303m or 2480 feet) in North America was already highly regarded as an Alpine skiing experience prior to the 1980-81 opening of Blackcomb Mountain. So, assuming you are already familiar with the snow bowls and marathon ski runs of Whistler, we will con- centrate on the newcomer — Blackcomb Mountain. Five chairs service the 1225m (4019 feet) vertical rise which eventually peak out just above the summit day lodge designated as Elevation 1860. Guests will first encounter a complete and efficient equipment rental service complemented by the Ski Ed (instruction program) at the lower day lodge known as Rendezvous 675. There's a Ski Ed registration desk at Elevation 1860 as well. Ski-ed director, Dennis Hansen describes Black- comb’s ski terrain as similar to Snowmass of Aspen, Colorado. | . “At least sixty per cent of the trail system js geared to the intermediate skier and there’s a separate lift (Skinner Chair) and a slope that is ideal for novices and as an introductory. in- struction area”. The scene from. the summit lodge is dominated by Blackcomb’'s peak rising yet another 40m above the bowl. Due east, the lofty runs of adjacent Whistler Mountain glisten in an expanse of early spring sun. And remember, there's the equally long 9 km (6 miles) runs of Whistler Mountain all accessible from the Village by the same lift and trail system.
