IN MY office is a branch from a corkscrew hazelnut tree;
its gnarled shape forms lines that curve gently then continue

Straight up,

form a sharp right angle,

twist around

themselves, grow downwards, and continue the pattern of
curves, angles and straight lines.

My cyes were drawn to it as |
pondered today’s topic: line —
one of the tools or elements of
design, used by artists, architects
and designers for centuries to
create a particular mood or effect.

Straight, diagonal or curved
lines, or their three-dimensional
cousins cube, pyramid and
sphere — can be used to acnieve a
psychological impact.

Imagine cathedrals, highrise
buildings, and gigantic cedars.
They inspire awe, dwarf us, and
faise our spirit. :

All three share an emphasis on
vertical line.

In a formal living room, the
sense of formality is achieved not
‘only with elegant furnishings, but
more likely with vertical lines: a
