July 2, 2000 ‘TRAVEL EXPLORING 8.C. — KELOWNA Res Alison Appelbe Contributing Writer AT the Manteo Resort in south Kelowna, a new wharf squeaks and moans in the spring breeze, awaiting the summer hoards. Tiny waves lap rhythmically at the rocks and coves, and fragile-looking wil- lows droop their branches over the water. On the opposite shore the Mission Hill and Quai Gare vineyards give the hill- side a manicured look. However, this feminine landscape isn’t confined to Okanagan Lake. It extends inland through the Mission Creek Greenway that begins a few hundred metres from the resort on Lakeshore Road, and runs for seven kilometres to Mission Creek Regional Park. I put on my walking shoes and headed into the, greenway that ultimately passes through 49 acres of lush, fertile wer- lands. Walkers, cyclists, jog- - gers, wheelchair users, even equestrians, have learned to share the three-metre-wide, hard-packed path. Fathe: Charles Pandosy established an Oblate mission here in 1860, along with a church, school and farm. Today this part of the city is known as Okanagan Mission, and Pandosy’s name appears fr ~ quently, although most prominently on Pandosy Street, which joins Kelowna’s downtown area with Lakeshore Road. The greenway, built large- ly with private donations of money and land, runs along the north side of the rushing creek. Towering old cotto woods line a route that i in berries, wild flowers, ferns and root plants, on used by the Indians. The creek remains a spawning ground for Rainbow trout and Kokance salmon. In September, the public can - watch the Kokanee spawn in a specially builr channel in the regional park. At regular intervals along - the trail, kiosks provide descriptions of the area’s nat- ural and human history. From earlier times, the Narives used it asa win- tering ground snd fishery. At prime locations, view- ing platforms extend over the creek, better described in late spring as a river, and the largest supplier of water to Okanagaa Lake. Further east, accessible through the city by McCullough Boad, lies Scenic Canyon Regional Park, Layer Cake Mountain, the Hoodoos, and access to the Kettle Valley Railbed. One portion of this engineering marvel, the Myra Canyon sce- tion, includes 18 trestles and two tunnels, and: takes about two hours to walk. Tt took me three hours to walk the length of the Mission Creck Greenway and return, via the Saturday farm- ers’ market on Springfield Road, to the Manteo Resort.
