I can’t remember the
last time I slept
through the night.

Ir was probably just before
I got pregnant with miy first
child. You know, before T had
to start getting up in the mid-
dle of the night to relieve the
pressure of the baby on my
bladder. I thought, ar the
time that that one small inter-
ruption was a really big drag.

It didn’t take me long to
realize how good I had it
hack then. The minute you
become a mother your solid
night’s sleep routine is oblit-
erated by the frantic wailing
of the seemingly starving
infant in the next room.

Three kids, thousands of
diapers and hundreds of
sleepy lullabies later 1. dike
most mothers, evolved into a
chronic light sleeper. And
even aiter all my kids were
sleeping through the night,
my maternal ear had me wak-
ing at the slightest noise, in
case someone was tangted up
in his blankets or just needed
acuddle.

When the kids were tod-
diers, they used to like to
climb into bed during the
night with my husband and . . . :
