ON Jan. 21, 1997, criminal sexual perver-

Vancouver’s Lower Lonsdale neighbor-
hood.

“The incident saw a local man climd on to the 10th floor
balcony of a great grandmother's bachelor suite, enter
through an open sliding door and proceed to sexuaily assault
her. *
“On Wednesday, Kevin Oakley, 30, appeared before Mr.
Justice Wally Oppal in B.C. Supreme Court to be sentenced
on a charge of sexual assault. Oakley plead guilty to the
charge.

76-year-old woman

Although he has been incarcerated since his arrest 16
months ago, Oakley was dressed windbreaker. He

Oakley climbed around the barrier separating the owe bal-
conies and entered the 76-year-old woman’s suite. She awoke
as he entered and got out of bed, but Oakley pushed her back
down on to the bed, Oakley got on top of the woman and
proceeded to raise her nightshirt.

The woman screamed for Oakley not to hurt her to which
he replied calmly that he would not. Nevertheless he contin-
ued unabated. Several minutes later he got up at which time
his victim ran to the bathroom and locked the door.

When she came out Oakley had left apparently the same
way he came in, but had pulled the phone cord out of the wall
on his way out. His frightened victim took a bath and
