that on competing BMW and
Mercedes models. Called
Vehicle Skid Control (VSC),
it works by integrating trac-
tion control, ABS sensors,

steering sensors, G sensors
and yaw sensors to brake
individual wheels and prevent
fishtailing and spinouts on
slippery surfaces.

I tested VSC under con-
troiled test conditions on a
watered-down parking lot
and can confirm that this sys-
tem works very well. Even
when flung through a sharp
S-curve at 80 km-h, the VSC
prevents the car from doing a

360 degree spin. With the
VSC system: turned off, 1 was
unable co negotiate the curve
without spinning out.

The GS400 is a great han-
dling car, and comes close to
the BMW 5401 in many
respects.

Its rear-wheel-drive layout
gives it excellent front to rear
weight balance (53/47 per
cent front/rear), and com-
bined with a new indepen-
denr multi-link rear suspen-
sion, front and rear stabilizer
bars, and gas-pressurized
shock absorbers, it is a
delightful sedan to drive on
almost any type of road.
