Our drivers not so bad Dear Editor: Re: Shaun Conlin's Nov. 1 Signals column, Having just returned from a short trip to Chicago, I feel somewhat smug in our driving habits on the North Shore in par- ticular and in the Lower Mainland in general. At first, in Chicago, | thought it was just the cabbies who drove in an “organic” manner (ie. veering from lane to lane without the slightest interest in| who was in either; running red lights as though they did- n’t exist). Then | discov- ered that. everyone appeared to drive this way! Sure, we have the “rocket brigades” here in North Van from time to time, and rush-hour com- muters tend to travel at somewhat increased speeds but I sei! think that our pace is sedate and con- trolled, when compared with Chicago. Firstly, because it made no sense. Traccused our Lions Bay mayor, Brenda Broughton, of opportunism simply because she declared herself candidate in the last provincial election. According to this “logic,” we could never have a prime minister because he would first have to run fora local office, then provincial, then national, all of which are political no- no’s according to the “wis- dom” of Ms. Sinith. So it follows that all of our public servants above the local level must be tarred with the -same brush — they sinned by failing to stay in their place. The second thing that bothered me, and many others here, was the vicious tone of this letter. That's torally out of character with the residents of this community, We pride ourselves on our n ‘mayt i friendliness and fairness, and such a mean-spirited atrack simply isn't tolerated in Lions Bay, Because of these things, | began to suspect that this fetter was nothing more than politi- cal dirty tricks, so FT called Mayor Broughton, who told me that she had tried to reach this mysterious Ms, Smith to determine what was really behind this attack. Predictably, there was no listing of this “long-time resi- dent of Lions Bay" in the vil- lage, and no one had ever seen or heard of her. Upon checking with the North Shore News, it was found that yeu had no tele- phone number for her, either, and [ suspect that if there was an address on the letter, it will turn out to be a vacant fot. All of the residents that I have heard from are appalled by this display of bad manners and cowardice. It not only uniairly maligns a person who has given of herself generously to this community, but by reflection, it casts aspersions on all of us who tive here.
