Champions Hollyburn bantams repeat at tourney DISCIPLINE AND goaltending were the driving forces that tumed a rebuilding year into a championship season for the Hollyburn Bantam hockey team. By Andrew McCredie Sperts Reporter Two weeks ago Hollybum Country Club’s squad repeated as ‘B.C single-A champs as they beat Elk Valley 5-4 in double-overtime in the championship game in Smithers. With just three players returning from lasts year’s championship team, coaches Jack Cummings and Dr. John Wilson had expected the 1994- 95 campaign to be a building and ‘learning experience for the fresh group of bantams. During the single-A bantam tour- nament, Hollyburn posted an impres- sive 4-0-1 record en route to the title, outscoring their opponents 33-11. “At Smithers we played the first game of the toumament and played very well in a 6-2 victory over Gold River,” said Cummings. “We watched the next two games of the day and by that time we were con- vinced that we had a chance. “Our goal was to get better and better every game, and I believe we did that.” Hollyburn forward Clayton Whitman certainly adhered to that goal, as he tallied nine goals and three assists in five games, including two markers in Hollyburn’s 5-4 championship win over Elk Valley. Only three penalties were called in the intense and competitive final that took double overtime to decide. “T believe we won due to great mental discipline,” said Cummings of the overtime win. *‘As a coach I felt very proud and confident of our team when | went into the room between periods in overtime. There was a very calm and confident atmosphere in the room. “It was rewarding to see players of this age dealing with the kind of pressure they were under with such strength: Cummings also credited the goal- tending tandem of Chris Mydske and Brent Laoun for their season- long contribution. Mydske had a 3.00 GAA during the B.C. tournament. Equalling Whitman’s red-light output was Daye Milne, who fin- ished the five-game tourney with a team-high 19 points (9. goals, 10 assists), including a four-goal perfor- mance in Hollyburn’s 7-2 win over Ashcroft. Sam Easton had 10 points (4 goals, 6 assists). DAYS Friday, April 7th ONLY Saturday, April 8th 7:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M.
