IT’S BEEN three years and some Dorothy Lynas elemen-
tary school parents are upset that there still isn’t a
crosswalk on a busy street near the school.

. Said parent Cam McOuat,
“This is a no-brainer as I kept on
saying at the all-candidates
meeting. You don’t need a brain
. to figure this one out.”

Parents. have requested a
crosswalk ‘on the road for three
years. through letters
phonecalls.

- Two parent council presidents at
the. school have also lobbied the
district for a crosswalk.

The latest move to get a
crosswalk involved a 150-name
petition recently sent to district
officials.

The 600-student elementary
school. is located a half. block
south of Indian River Drive near
the Inlet Crescent cul-de-sac.

Joyce said a crosswalk was
turned down in the area previous-
ly, in part because of statistics
that indicate more people are hit
by cars in marked crosswalks than
unmarked crosswalks.

“We are very careful where we
place these crosswalks’ now
because the children. develop a
false sense of security when they
step off the curb and walk be-
tween the two white lines,’’ said

Meanwhile, Dorothy Lynas
parent Martha Tecklenburg orga-
nized the recent petition which
asked for the following on Indian
River Drive:

@.a lit crosswalk;

@ a sign indicating a school zone
was present;

@ a speed limit change to a
school zone limit.

Right now the section of road
has a 50 km/h speed limit.

Said Tecklenburg, “A fot of
parents won’t fet their children
cross that road,’’

She said cars often go faster
than the speed limit in a curve
road area where visibility is rela-
tively poor.

“It’s just a dangerous mix of
cars and children crossing the
road... What we’re saying is that

there is so much more traffic there

now,” said Tecklenburg.

Tecklenburg crosses’ Indian
River Drive four times a day with
her children and says there are
“numerous close calls’ involving
pedestrians crossing the street.

Tecklenburg said a_ vehicle
recently had to brake abruptly to
avoid hitting her.

McOuat said the district didn’t
feel justified to mark a crosswalk,
but had no qualms about dispat-
