human-scale needs. According to
Montreal architect Witold Rybc-
zynski, today’s architects are too
busy making personal statements.

“lf people want to create per-
sonal statements they should write
poems or make paintings,’”’ said
Rybezynski. ;

Helliwell says contemporary ar-
chitecture doesn’t listen to the
public enough.

“It can feel too elitist, which is
ironic, because it's an art form that
depends on the public entirely. |
think you have to be involved with
the pulse of the public, but on the
other hand, that adds a mediocrity
toa lot of buildings because the

public is usually quite far behind
the trends.”’

into the Howard Rourke theory of

" architecture where if it's not exact-

ly what we want, we'll burn the
building down,” says Smith. “‘But
| think in the end we believe the
building is ultimately for the
public.”
