Ahoy, sailors! Time to tack in the News’ 15th annual sailing race LAST YEAR there wasn’t a iot of wind, but there was plenty of fun. By Anna Marie D’Angelo News Reporter This year the 15th Annual North Shore News Sailing Race, set for Father's Day, Sunday, June 21, proniises to be even more fun. The pre-race skippers’ meeting, presented by News publisher and avid sailor Peter Speck, is sched- uled to be held on Thursday, J 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the » Shore News, 1139 Lonsdale Av... On race day, Speck’s ship, the 47-foot Talofa Lee, will be vying for position with the other race entrants at West Vancouver's Dundarave Pier for the 10 a.m. Start. Last year, about 70 sailboats took part in the race. The course is set to run 1/2 mile WSW of the Point Atkinson lighthouse and then to the Point Grey beil-buoy before finishing in waters just off the Kitsilano Yacht Club at 3 p.m. “This is a fun, family race, and we encourage participants to dress in costumes and decorate their boats,” said News promotion manager Cheryl Carter. Categories for awards this year include Best Nautically Dressed Crew, Youngest Crew Member and Most Enthusiastic Sailing Club. The post-race awards ceremony will take place at the Granville Island Hotel's Hollywood Club. Hungry sailors will be treated to a buffet of snacks and sandwiches at the ceremony, Race entry fees are $30, and the deadline for entries is Friday, June 19, at noon at the North Shore News. Sager is accepting pledges of a penny a mile for the 2,310 mile race with proceeds go- ing to Canuck House, a Van- couver hospice for terminally ill children.
