48 - Friday, April 24, 1992 ~ North Shore News AUTOMOTIVE NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP traffic department Sgt. Don Killer watches drivers as they approach a stop sign recently installed at 15th Street and Ridgeway Avenuc. The police are - monitoring traffic in the area. Police say there has been much heavy braking at the site. Only Japanese coupe made with V6 engine Having tried all combinations From page 43 adequate. A couple of complaints: the steering wheel obscures some of the stereo and heater controls, making it awkward to make ad- justments while driving. Secondly, the driver's door has a small pull insert where the left elbow rests, feeling uncomfortable. At the moment, the MX-6 is the only Japanese sporty coupe available with a V6engine. The new 2.5-litre, dual overhead cam, 24-valve V6 engine has 164 horsepower, 19 more horses than the previous turbocharged four- cylinder engine (which is no longer available). The V6 is a very smooth, quiet, powerful engine that likes to be revved high, and thus performs better when mated with the man- ual five-speed trarsmission. The manual transmission, by the way, is considerably smoother than previous Mazda transmissions I’ve driven. An optional four-speed automatic, with normal and power rnodes, is also available. The standard powertrain on the base RS model is now a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine witii 118 horsepower (previously 2.2 litres with 110 horsepower). This engine is adequate, but when mated to the automatic transmission, does not offer inspiring performance. It’s also a little noisier than the v6. However, the fuel economy of the four-cylinder car is con- siderably better than the V6- equipped MX-6. The former averages 30 mpg in city driving while the latter averages 24 mpg. In addition, the V6 engine re- quires more expensive premium gasoline. . of engine an: transmissions, | would recommend the V6 with the five-speed manual, despite its poorer fuel economy. The L3 V6 model also comes with four-wheel disc brakes and available ABS brakes. On the highway, the MX-6 is quiet and vibration-free; however, the hood vibrates visibly when travelling over rough surfaces. The ride, handling, and steering control are very good for a front-wheel-drive car, but not quite as good as the class-leading rear-wheel-drive Nissan 240SX. However, its excellent outward visibility, low hoodlines, respon- sive engine and smooth transmis- sion add up to a very pleasant driving experience. 24 HOUR ROAD ASSISTANCE...1-800-387-0122.
