The Bent House

IN KEEPING with the
tradition of naming a
heritage home after its first
owner, this house is called
the Bent House, after
Robert J. Bent.

Little is known of the Bent
family or the owner himself, ex-
cept that they lived on this street
when some of the other homes
adjacent to them were being built.

The neighboring homes are also
fine examples of heritage build-
ings.

Standing tall and proud on
Queens Road Wesi, this home was
constructed in 1912 in the Edwar-
dian Builder Style, but it also has
Craftsman features clearly visible.

The Bent home is an excellent
example of the transitional blen-
ding cf these two architectural
styles.

The Edwardian style is seen in
the tall vertical structure of the
building with its full open front
veranda and square porch col-
umas and balusters.

Another feature of this style is
the front gable roof with side shed
dormer and bay windows.

The decorative and distinctive ©

features of the Craftsman style
can be seen in the white painted
triangular eave brackets, dentil
course (small square blocks in a
horizontal row, resembling teeth,
used for decoration), and exposed
rafter ends.

Also of note are the stained
glass panels, and in particular, the
diamond-shaped window beside
the front door.

its oval glass set in, as was the
style at that time.
Although the stairs have been

‘rebuilt and altered, probably from

a frontal location to the side, they
do not detract from the stately
quality of this solidly built home
of yesterday.
