physical sciences as best express-
ing society's creativity: hence his
focus on urey, overhead cables
and the new perspectives atforded
by modern technology — such as

opposed to idealized pastoral

Roca-Rey expresses the tension
and complexity of modern-day life
by working with steel, chrome and
enamel, He has long been fasci-
nated by “‘the nobility of
metais,”’ their unique physical and
chemical properties, elasticity and
strength,

His stecly forms — which have
been compared in concept to the
fantasy of jules Verne and the in-
ventive inquisitiveness of da Vinci
-- resemble ships and futuristic-
looking machines.

“Some people ask me, ‘Why
do you make such strange stuff —
why rot naked bodies?’ ” says the
slender, soft-spoken Roca-Rey.

“4 tell them that the world I see
through my eyes isn’t like that.
Romanticism is gone — we live in
another world. Man now has at his
disposal new points of view with
the laser beam, black light and X-
ray. | find it much more
stimulating to took through a mi-
croscope than to walk through &
park,’’

Roca-Rey, the son of divorced
diplomats, spent practically every
year of his youth growing up ina
different European country. Asa
fine arts student, he studied at
l'Ecole de Beaux Arts in Lausanne,
Switzerland, then as apprentice to
Peruvian sculptor Alberto Guzman
in Paris, bef-re going off to study
the history of metals and art resto-
