North Van’s Maplewood Farm makes for a fun learning experience CHILDREN AND adults alike will enjoy a taste of life on a real farm at Maplewood Farm = in North Vancouver's Dollarton area. The five-acre farm, which can be reached from the Upper Levels Highway by taking the Deep Cove-Mount Seymour Exit near the Second Narrows Bridge, was first settled in the early 1900s. Since then, it has been home to a number of thriving farm opera- dons, and was purchased by North Vancouver District in 1970. {n 1975, Maplewood Farm was opened for the public to enjoy. 8 Today, families and school tours are still having fun and learning f from the farm’s many displays, * demonstrations and approximately f 200 animals and birds. At the ticket booth — which used to be the office for the dog breeding business once operated on the farm — visitors can pay for their admission ($1 for children and seniors, $1.50 plus GST for adults) and, if they wish, buy a bag of bird seed and the $2 Guide to Maple vood Farm. Then it’s off to visit the kid goats in their pen — watch out, they have a habit of chewing on loose bits of clothing or shoes laces — feed the rabbits and guinea pigs any fruits and vegetables you may have brought with you, and see a number of other animals and birds, including cows, horses and ponies, pigs, sheep, dankeys and different kinds of ducks and fowl. At 1:15 p.m. each day, farm visitors can watch a demonstration of hand-milking in the livestock barn. Special events taking place at the farm this summer are the 11th Annual Sheep Fair on Sunday, May 26 and the 8th Annual Farm Fair on the weekend of Sept. 14 and 15. At the Sheep Fair, visitors can see craft exhibitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and watch sheep shear- ing at Il a.m. and 1 p.m. A number of fun activities will take place at the September Farm Fair, which will run from Sept. 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Maplewood Farm is apen daily, except non-holiday Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, Groups may also wish to book a tour at the farm.
