Place Stadium will have the opportunity to see a number of concept cars and prototypes. Chevrolet’s concept Camaro IROC provides a glimpse of possible future 2 + 2 sports cars. The concept Chevrolet Camaro IROC was designed at General Motors Advanced Design Centre at Newbury Park, California. The design study grew from scale model to full-size running pro- totype in just six months. It has a smooth, rounded, yet aggressive body shape with lots of planned view. The tip of the hood dips dramatically to a point and is flanked by high, rounded wheel wells. The angle of the hood continues its swoop up the front of the car, angling the windshield over the engine compartment considerably more than the current Camaro. Sleek sides are achieved with flush-mounted and side-view mir- rors integrated into the California Camaro’s body. The rear is raked slightly upwards and finished off with a spoiler, glass hatch and unique slivers of tail lights. The most striking feature is the car’s flamboyant use of glass, in- viting the sunshine to its passen- gers. The expensive glass that wraps around the top half of the car is only briefly interrupted by the thin pillars that support it. Built by a 50-person team at the Advanced Concept Centre, the car is metal, rather than the fibregiass used in many design studies, to demonstrate the dramatic effects that can be achieved with conven- tional materials. Design study vehicles are not usually very accommodating, but getting into the California Camaro is like inserting yourself into a custom-designed airplane cockpit. The gull-wing door pulls up, unlike any other, takes part of the roof with it and veers at a 45° angie to the front of the car, so the driver has to bend very little to fit into the seat. The driver’s seat is unique because it can be custom-fitted to DONT WATE TOREADIT the individual driver. Emphasizing the importance of the driver- machine relationship, the drivec’s seat is red, while the others in the 2+2 packaging are black. The reach curves, the relation- ship between the driver's arms and the steering wheel and the driver's legs and the pedals, are more precise, accommodating a wide range of body sizes. The seating also provides a more alert driver-oriented position due to the Formula-One inspired cockpit configuration of driver gauges and controls. Looking from the road to primary oversiz- ed analogue gauges requires minimal eye adjustment by the driver. Shifting is convenient with a high mounted, short throw shifter. The radio is molded into the in- strument panel for a smooth Icok. An added touch is a small vacuum cleaner, for cleaning the car’s in- terior, which is part of the centre console. These are just two of the features exemplary of Chevrolet’s ongoing search for the best way to design for its customer market.
