Jack Loucks on travel, fishing and making tough decisions What's the hardest part of being the Mayor of North Vancouver City?: “1 guess it's sometimes try- ing to make a decision on a pro- ject when you're not clear on what the best thing to do is. If I feel it is the right decision, even though some people may be op- posed, then I'm happy with the decision. But when you're not clear on it, then it's difficult to make a decision. h’s not very often that I’m uncertain on a decision but it does happen from time to time.”’ What do people usually say to you when they run into you out in public?: **They usually say “Hi.” A few times they may have prob- lems that they’ tell me about. I maintain an open door policy. | listen to people’s concerns and we uy to make sure our staff listens to people’s concerns. I think peo- ple in general are happy with the job we're doing.” What is the hardest politica) deci- sion you've ever had to make?: “‘! find that a difficult question to answer. Over 13 years you've had to make a lot of difficult decisions and off the top of my head I just can’t recall which has been the most difficult. You face each of these decisions as you go along.” What do you like to do to relax?: “I’m not a fisherman like some people are, but I like to fish. Every summer my wife and I go up to the Pavillion Lakes. If we have the time we like to go travel- ling. We've been to Britain four times, Japan twice and China once. We've travelled across Canada twice in our trailer. We enjoy getting out and staying ina lot of national and provincial parks.”’ What is a routine day like for you?: ‘‘My days vary a lot. My typical day, if there is one, is hard to describe. i have certain meetings I have to go to and documents to sign. Sometimes f'll meet with staff and then people, like developers, come in and see me. Some days you’re running all the time and on others you have breathing room. It would be good if you could combine the two.”” optical shop 925-1522 C-4348 marine drive west vancouver HIS OWN Toes Se! 4, NEWS photos Terry Peters TAKING CARE of business: North Vancouver City Mayor Jack Loucks’ days are spent in meetings and reading documents. © NAME: Jack Loucks © AGE: 72 * RESIDENCE: North Vancouver City © OCCUPATION: Mayor, North Vancouver City * FAMILY: Wife, Olive, three daughters, one son, five grandchildren * HOBBIES: Fishing, travelling CAULFEILD GALLERY Presents 2 / we NY ees CRAIG YEATS Exclusive showing of original acrylic paintings Thursday, Octoher 4th from 6-9 p.m. ARTIST IN ATTENDANCE Caulfeild Village 5347 Headland Dr., West Vancouver 926-1886 iT’S A MATTER OF LIFE AND BREATH + British Columbia Lung Association Sunday, September 30, 1990 - North Shore News ~ 47 AFFLVENCE & INFLUENCE cul = NORTH VANCOUVER City Mayor Jack Loucks takes time out from a busy day to admire one of several pieces of native art which fine his office walls. We're (city) a more urbanized area. We're five square miles with 36,000 people,’* says Loucks. "We have urban problems. The two communities may be similiar and they work together very well, but 1 do believe we are better served with our own council.” Jack Loucks has been a fixture in North Vancouver for decades and he knows both the city and the district like the back of his hand.
